Discover the progression of the “Duguay-Trouin,” the French Navy's second nuclear attack submarine, as it advances towards becoming fully operational. With cutting-edge technology onboard and rigorous testing underway, this is a journey you won't want to miss.
Duguay-Trouin: Journey towards Operational Excellence
The Duguay-Trouin, France's second nuclear attack submarine, is in the process of verifying its capabilities. It was handed over to the French Navy by the Directorate General of Armament [DGA] in August. After a brief stopover at Spain's Rota naval base, it is now journeying to its home port in Toulon for maintenance. The objective is to become fully operational after sea trials to be conducted during the first half of 2023.
Long-Term Deployment for Capability Verification
Before being admitted to active service, the Duguay-Trouin will undergo a long-term deployment [DLD]. The DLD is a rigorous process that tests the submarine's full military capabilities in a variety of conditions, such as warm and cold waters. Currently, the submarine is stationed in Fort-de-France, Martinique, where it will remain until March 9 as part of the DLD.
Security Measures during Deployment
While stationed in Martinique, stringent security measures have been implemented. These measures include a ban on ships, fishing, swimming, and diving within a 300-meter radius. Gas transport trucks are also prohibited from getting near the submarine. This kind of deployment in Martinique was last seen when La Perle was stationed here back in March 2011.
High-Level Technology Features
The Duguay-Trouin boasts advanced technology features that few nations are capable of producing. It was specifically designed for submarine warfare and equipped with an X-bar for improved manoeuvrability and a cruise missile for stealth attacks. Furthermore, it carries the PSM3G, a small submarine for the covert deployment of commandos, a notable advancement from the previous Rubis class.
What’s Next for the Duguay-Trouin?
If the long-term deployment proceeds as expected, the Duguay-Trouin will soon join the ranks of active service submarines. The French Navy is keen on having two operational “war beasts” in their fleet, boosting their military prowess on the global stage.
