Intriguing deliberations are ongoing about the name for the next generation aircraft carrier, or PA NG. What name will ultimately grace this impressive vessel?
The Historical Service of Defence (SHD) typically selects names for such military vessels. These names usually draw inspiration from a range of sources such as virtues, natural environments, the spirit of cohesion, the influence of France, or as a tribute to battles or historical figures.
An Innovative Approach Requested
In a shift from tradition, Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu has requested the SHD to suggest more inventive names for the new carrier. While several names were proposed, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Richelieu, none of these appeared to make the final cut.
Two Controversial Names under Consideration
Currently, two names are in the running: Simone Veil and François Mitterrand. However, using the name of a former president may stir controversy due to political divisions. It's a delicate balance to strike.
A Tribute to a Late Admiral?
Another name proposed for the carrier is that of Admiral Philippe de Gaulle, who sadly passed away recently at the age of 102. The son of General de Gaulle, Admiral de Gaulle was his first companion but was never bestowed the title of Companion of Liberation, despite his commendable accomplishments.
Many feel that naming the new generation aircraft carrier after Admiral Philippe de Gaulle would be a fitting tribute and a way to rectify this perceived oversight.
