MQ-9 Reaper Block 5 drones, owned by the Air and Space Army, have finally received authorization to fly in French airspace.
The authorization for these advanced drones to operate within France has been in limbo for quite some time. Specifically, only three out of the 12 MALE MQ-9 Reaper drones belonging to the 33rd Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Attack Squadron (ESRA) could fly in French airspace until the summer of 2023.
The trio of drones held a Block 1 standard, which included a navigability certificate from the State Aeronautical Safety Directorate (DSAE). The remaining nine drones were either in the process of upgrading or had already been upgraded to the enhanced Block 5 standard.
Block 5: More than Just an Upgrade
The Block 5 upgrade isn't a mere software update, it's a comprehensive overhaul of the entire system. This update includes not only better software and sensors but also a revamped electrical system. Moreover, the Block 5 drones are capable of carrying Hellfire air-to-ground missiles and GBU-48 laser and GPS-guided bombs.
However, this extensive upgrade put the Block 5 drones in a different category from the Block 1 drones. This required them to have a separate navigability certificate. But obtaining this new certificate was fraught with challenges and delays.
Challenges in Certification
After a long wait of three years, these advanced drones are now cleared for French airspace. The so-called “type certification of version 2408 of the MQ-9 Reaper” was signed by Olivier Borde, DGA's Armament General Engineer, on January 25. This certification is more than just a formality; it marks a significant milestone in the integration of this drone into France's airspace.
The clearance came after a test flight by the DGA and three additional tests conducted by the Military Aerial Expertise Center (CEAM) of Mont-de-Marsan. These rigorous tests confirmed the Reaper's ability to safely fly over French territory with its new 2408 software version.
Expanding Drone Capabilities
This certificate not only provides access to the French skies for the Reaper Block 5, but also aligns the entire Reaper fleet. Additionally, it enables the inclusion of new payloads, including the electromagnetic pod, the Hellfire missile, and the GBU-49 bomb.
