Bowling for Soup
Interview with Bowling for Soup/People on Vacation's Jaret Reddick
Pop-punk legends Bowling For Soup turned up the volume at Animefest on Sept. 3. But before their set, I got a chance to meet up with Jaret Reddick, the creative genius behind it all. We talked about life, how to be happy and his new side project People On Vacation.
Q: You're definitely the happiest person I've ever met. How is it that you keep so happy all of the time?
Reddick: I made a conscious decision in the eighth grade. I'll never forget it. One day I woke up and said "Ya know, I don't think I'm gonna be in a bad mood anymore." Ever since then I've always been able to be like "S___'s bad, this sucks, but there's all this other stuff that's awesome and I'm gonna be happy today!" That's what I do. It's just a mind thing. So many things are just in your head.
"We decide what kind of an adult we're gonna be, how we treat people, and how things are gonna affect us. We just do! I'm a guy that tends to just look on the bright side pretty much all of the time. But I wish The Killers didn't take that from me.
"You can let yourself be mad about anything, but you can also talk yourself out of being mad about anything! ...Death is a funny thing to talk about, to be completely honest, I'm scared s___less about dying. It's less about what happens and more about what I miss. Obviously that's not what I'm supposed to do. I had high blood pressure a few months ago and it was a bit of a scare. I was like "I can't die! My son's 5!"
At this point, Jack, Reddick's 5-year old son, came up to us out of nowhere, further humanizing Reddick.
Jack Reddick: Dad! Did you know that someone is dressed up as Sailor Moon? Did you know that was going to happen?
Jaret Reddick: No! I Didn't! I'll be out in a few minutes though, OK? I packed you some chex mix and goldfish in the back. ...That! I don't want to miss that!
Q: People on Vacation is in its toddler stages. How is it coming up in this new band, compared to Bowling For Soup when you were first getting started?
Reddick: The beauty of it is that we sort of have an advantage. We're a baby band, but he's (Ryan Hamilton of Smile Smile) in a successful band and I'm in a successful band. He's got his fans and I've got mine, and we play these shows and people already come to watch us! The new [bands] actually get paid most of the time too!
"It's such a different thing from when BFS was coming up and we were still playing for free after signing to Jive. People on Vacation is such a cool outlet. It's fun to be able to write different kinds of music, ‘cause I'm always writing for movies or TV or other bands. It's nice to be able to do it from a creative standpoint then actually deliver it. It's an entire different vibe and so much fun. Ryan and I are still learning to play off of each other. With BFS we play off each other so well it's like we script everything out. Anyways, it's a freakin' blast and I'm loving every minute of it!
People On Vacation is a whole different kind of breed from the likes of indie folk guru Hamilton and funny man, Reddick. Their debut six track EP comes out Thanksgiving weekend possibly accompanied by a short documentary of the band. You can check out People On Vacation at wearepeopleonvacation.com or see them live at Club Dada in Dallas on Friday (Sept. 16).
With all of this talk and excitement about People On Vacation it's easy to think this is the end for Bowling For Soup, but it's quite the contrary. Bowling For Soup's 11th album, "Fishin' For Woos" was just released back in April and the band is currently working on their second Christmas album. You can purchase "Fishin' For Woos" on iTunes and expect to hear more from Bowling For Soup in the near future.
