Memories Still Fresh at Fort Hood

A mood of solemn professionalism prevailed at Fort Hood as the sun set on the site of one of the worst mass shootings ever on a U.S. military base. It was a Saturday evening, two days after a gunman opened fire on fellow military personnel on Nov. 5. Calm military personnel guided press from the front gate to the lawn of the III Corps building, where a small army of television cameras, lights, and TV news trucks swarmed to capture the latest updates and information as it trickled from the Public Affairs Office in intermittent press conferences. Another attack leaves US Muslims fearing backlash

As word spread that a gunman had opened fire at Fort Hood leaving a trail of carnage, a chilling realization swept across the U.S. Muslim community: He has an Islamic name. From a professor who just testified in Congress, to a White House adviser appearing before a Jewish group and a former Marine driving home from work, Muslims across the country were shocked, angry and afraid that the attack would erode efforts to erase anti-Islamic stereotypes. Richland College and the nation will celebrate International Education Week Nov. 16-20. The Multicultural Center will have an Open House from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in which they will present videos on the culture of a number of different countries and serve refreshments. Martin Miller never thought he'd be tutoring English grammar and essay writing as a retiree, but now he likes it so much, he won't be leaving anytime soon - even after getting his associate's degree in ornamental horticulture in May. Miller, 73, has been a Richland student since 2001, taking all the core courses through the years and majoring in horticulture. (0) comments

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - Pvt. Joseph Foster took a bullet in the leg during the Fort Hood shooting rampage. He pauses when he's asked about the mayhem, then credits a stout heritage with bringing him through the ordeal and leaving him eager for his scheduled January deployment to Afghanistan. (0) comments

Russia: 2 suspects in lawyer, journalist killings

MOSCOW (AP) - Russian investigators said Thursday they have detained two suspects in the killings of a human rights lawyer and a journalist who were shot in central Moscow in January. Stanislav Markelov, 34, and Anastasia Baburova, 25, were shot after leaving a news conference in a brazen attack by a lone gunman wearing a stocking-style mask. (0) comments
