If at first you don't recognize "Mylo Xyloto" by its title, as soon as the music starts it is obvious Coldplay is behind this new album. It's impressive how the band can make such a unique album but still be easily recognizable.
After a brief intro, this album opens up fast with "Hurts Like Heaven." Guitars switch from fluid distortions to harsher notes and everything in between. On what is mostly a slower-paced album, this track really stands out and pulls the listener in.
"Paradise" is a great example of the calmer songs on the album. From a gentle string opening to a louder chorus driven by bass, this song has just about everything. Despite all this track has to offer, my favorite part is still toward the beginning when only a piano and drums are needed to support Chris Martin's vocals.
The lead single, "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," features guitar that goes back and forth between high-pitched solo notes and more subtle riffs. This song builds momentum from beginning to end without missing a beat.
"Princess of China" also really fits in this electro rock album. Featuring Rihanna, this track is heavy with the synthesizer, and it works well with her style. The vocal pairing with Martin produces a sound you won't find anywhere else.
Overall, "Mylo Xyloto" is the perfect album to play in the background on a relaxing night. If you're the kind of person who enjoys falling asleep to good music, this album is the right choice. It certainly does the trick for me.
