Finally, a movie that isn't a remake or update of a previously told tale. Sure, others of the genre are similar, namely "Free Willy" and "Flipper," but Charles Martin Smith's "Dolphin Tale" glides right into the emotion of helping those less fortunate.

The dolphin Winter stars as herself, a onetime success story who loses her fin in a crab trap. The story centers on her friendship with Sawyer Neson, portrayed by Nathan Gamble, and his search to find someone to give her a new tale.

The cast members are all solid in their roles, especially Ashley Judd as Lorraine Nelson. Strong support also comes from Morgan Freeman as Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who assists with giving Winter a new tail.

Also noteworthy are Harry Connick, Jr. and Kris Kristofferson as Dr. Clay Hackett and Reed Hackett, respectively. Cozi Zuehlsdorff is credible as Hazel Haskett, who befriends Sawyer, and so is Frances Sternhagen as Gloria Forrest. She helps run the sanctuary where Winter will temporarily stay.

Director Charles Martin Smith knows when to incorporate the 3-D technology into the story. He does not cram it down the viewers' throats, instead Smith uses it sparingly with the right affect.
